• NCTE standards cover a wide range of literature, strategies, knowledge, and information. These resources are used to develop language skills and literacy needed to gain a higher understanding. While there are only twelve standards, they cover a deep range of curriculum and knowledge. The standards are informative about the range of resources used to accomplish these purposes.

  • Common Core Standards for ELA are much more detailed going in depth for individual types of standards. For example, there are separate standards for literature, informational text, writing, speaking and listening, and language. Each category is also broken up into grade level. These all focus on a more detailed explanation of what should be covered in each category. What I took from this detailed set of standards is that it focuses on how students will gain, comprehend, and use information in and out of the classroom.

  • Both sets of standards focus on the outcome rather than how exactly this learning will take place. Basically, they seem to focus on what the students will be learning rather than how the teacher will be teaching. They acknowledge the importance of language, literacy, and culture as well as how they have an affect on one another. Both sets describe the diverse amount of learning students will be doing and how they must have an understanding and respect for different diversities. The way language will be taught is also mentioned in both sets of standards. A variety of methods and strategies should be used in order to teach language. They will be working with a wide range of resources that will help them to gain more of an understanding of how language affects them. The types of literacy that are valued can be seen in the way the standards address different dialects and using multiple points of views. Students fit into these standards because they focus on the learner. They focus on what students will be doing in order to gain a more varied knowledge base. Teachers fit in because they will be the leaders of this learning. They will need to understand how best to use these standards as a starting point for their teaching. I do believe these standards work together because they focus on what is needed to help students succeed in their educational careers. The teacher still has room to determine best teaching practices in order to fulfill these standards. As a teacher, these standards could help me understand some of my goals for lesson plans. If my students have met all the requirements for these standards, they are likely on the right track. These standards could help provide a framework for creating lessons that are useful for my future students.
